Leadership in Context: Shifting Conditions, Changing Demands

Preliminary findings from the 2020 Global Leadership Forecast

How do the demands of leadership change as work context shifts? A recent review (Reynolds, McCauley, & Tsacoumis, 2018) of the state of the field related to the assessment and development of senior leadership assessment cited the need for more work on the role of context when defining leader performance. But given the diversity of leadership theories, models, and practices, how should context be considered? This presentation examines the role of context for leadership from a practical perspective. Examples are drawn from our leadership consulting practice and data will be reviewed from DDI’s Global Leadership Forecast, a massive survey of leadership effectiveness conducted over several decades. Results will also be shared from the most recent version of the survey, conducted during the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic. Implications for leaders and the assessment and development programs designed to serve them will be discussed.
